Post-COVID Economic Landscape in East & South East Asia

Home to some of the world’s largest economies and international financial hubs, East and Southeast Asia play a significant role in the wider global economy. During our first speaker event of the year, we invited Dr Yougesh Khatri, Mr Russell Pell and Mr Euben Paracuelles to discuss COVID-19’s initial economic impacts, as well as national responses and recovery across the region. We will also explore the current positions of specific industries, geopolitical implications and other macroeconomic issues.

About the speakers:

Dr Yougesh Khatri is an Associate Professor at Nanyang Business School (NTU, Singapore). He is also an Associate Fellow at Chatham House, Senior International Advisor to the Australia-Indonesia Partnership for Economic Development (Jakarta), consultant to the Asian Development Bank (Manila), and on the Board of Directors at OMFIF Foundation (London). Yougesh returned to academia after 20 years in the public and private sectors. He has held positions at the IMF (including 3 years as an IMF Resident Representative in Jakarta and 2 years in the Tokyo office), the GIC, and at Nomura Securities Singapore. Yougesh has published journal articles, book chapters and working papers in a wide range of areas and his research and policy interests span macroeconomics, economic development, finance and long-term asset management.

Russell Pell is a partner at GXS Partners, a strategic consulting firm based in Hong Kong with a focus on Greater China and the Asia Pacific region. Russell has over 20 years of strategic and operational consulting experience and 10 years in industry management roles, having worked in sectors such as energy, manufacturing, transport, infrastructure and corporate services. His previous positions include Managing Partner at Arthur D. Little, Vice President at Capgemini, and held senior roles in PwC and ExxonMobil. Russell is also an alumnus of UCL, with a Bachelor of Engineering in Biochemical Engineering.

Euben Paracuelles is the Executive Director and Chief Economist for Southeast Asia at Nomura, a global investment bank with an established presence in the Asia Pacific Region. Euben has over 15 years experience in ASEAN macroeconomics and capital markets, with previous experience working at RBS, Credit Suisse, and DBS. Euben also appears frequently as a commentator in news articles as well as TV interviews, covering economic and policy developments across the whole of Southeast Asia.
